How to care for your hair this winter

Every season brings new haircare challenges. In summer, your hair can suffer with sun damage, dryness from heat or oiliness from products like sun cream. But winter brings completely different challenges. When the temperatures drop and you turn your central heating up or pull on a wooly hat, your hair is equally as effected.

We’ve put together our top tips to help you care for your hair, keeping it glossy, hydrated and well looked after through the colder months that approach. Protecting your hair from the elements is key. There are some really easy steps you can take now, before winter really sets in, to get your hair prepared and minimise the damage.

Simple steps to protect your hair

Your scalp will be more prone to dryness due to the cooler weather, leading to itchiness and conditions like dandruff. Start to shampoo less often if possible to lessen flakes of dry skin on your scalp, and use a hydrating leave-in conditioner if you start to notice static flyaway strands of hair.

When it comes to styling, less is more over winter. Where possible, reduce your use of heat styling products like straighteners and hair dryers (or simply cut down on your drying time or use a cooler setting). To reduce breakage further, there are plenty of protective styles you can try - this includes buns, plaits or braids.

Night time provides a great opportunity to really hydrate and moisturise your hair. Use a hair oil, leave-in conditioner or hair mask overnight to allow the moisture to be fully absorbed into your hair and scalp. Then, rinse in the morning and reap the benefits throughout the day.
